For this wedding at The Grand Hotel of Cape May, nearly the entire day happened under one roof.

The bride got ready in one of the hotel's suites, we photographed all of the formalities at The Grand, the ceremony took place on the second floor, and then everyone headed upstairs for cocktail hour and the reception on the fifth floor.

From a photography and wedding-day experience perspective, we loved how easy everything felt.

Nobody was constantly getting into cars. There wasn't a complicated timeline built around traveling between multiple locations. Once everyone arrived at The Grand Hotel, they could settle in and enjoy the wedding.

Getting Ready in a Suite at The Grand Hotel

The wedding day began in one of The Grand Hotel's suites, where the bride got ready surrounded by her closest people.

We love photographing wedding mornings in hotel suites because everyone can settle into the space and let the morning happen naturally. Dresses are hanging, makeup is being finished, music is playing, people are coming in and out, and the excitement slowly builds as everyone realizes the ceremony is getting closer.

Those hours give us so much more than photographs of hair and makeup.

They're part of the story.

Having that happen right at The Grand Hotel also meant there was no rush to pack everything up and immediately travel somewhere else.

We photographed all of the couple's formalities at The Grand Hotel before moving into the rest of the celebration.

One thing we always consider when photographing a wedding at a hotel is how much variety we can create without taking our couple away from their day for too long.

The Grand gave us plenty to work with.

Being in Cape May already creates such a distinctive atmosphere, but the hotel itself also offers different spaces and backgrounds that allow us to create portraits, wedding party photographs, and family formals without turning the entire day into a photoshoot.

That's always our goal.

We want you to have the photographs you'll frame and put into your album, but we don't think getting those photographs should require missing your wedding.

A Second-Floor Ceremony

The ceremony took place on the second floor of The Grand Hotel, making the transition from getting ready and photographs into the actual wedding incredibly easy.

There was something we really appreciated about having everything contained within the property.

Once guests arrived, they were there.

They could find their seats, experience the ceremony, and then move directly into the celebration afterward without worrying about transportation or navigating multiple locations around Cape May.

For the couple, it also meant the day could continue moving forward naturally.

And that's something we notice as photographers.

The fewer logistical interruptions there are, the more opportunities couples have to actually stay present with their people.

Cocktail Hour on the Fifth Floor

After the ceremony, everyone made their way up to the fifth floor for cocktail hour.

This is where the energy of the day shifted.

The formal part of the wedding was over. The couple was officially married. Drinks started flowing, food came out, conversations filled the room, and everyone could finally settle into celebration mode.

Cocktail hour is one of our favorite parts of any wedding to photograph because almost nothing needs to be directed.

People are simply being themselves.

Friends reconnect.

Family members hug.

Someone grabs another drink.

The couple gets pulled into conversations with people they haven't seen in months.

Those are exactly the kinds of moments we're always looking for.

A Fifth-Floor Reception in Cape May

The celebration continued on the fifth floor for the reception, keeping everything together and allowing the evening to flow seamlessly from cocktail hour into dinner and dancing.

There's a huge advantage to that.

Once the party starts, nobody has to think about where they're going next.

Everyone is already there.

The couple can enjoy dinner, spend time with their guests, and eventually hit the dance floor without another transition interrupting the momentum of the night.
